Performance Based, Competitive and Leadership Activities

1331 & REDEFINE, respectively, are the male and female a cappella groups at Southwest.  Both groups are auditioned, rehearse once a week before school in the spring, and perform at choir concerts, graduation, and other outside events. Meetings are once a week, second semester.

Southwest High School’s Academic Decathlon team challenges students to push their academic limits while exploring a wide range of subjects — from science and literature to art, math, and social science. Team members work together to prepare for competitions that test their knowledge, communication, and critical thinking skills. The group also participates in fun team bonding activities throughout the year as well!

In math club, we practice and prepare for math meets.  There are 3 divisions:  9th-10th graders, 11th graders, and 12th graders and medals get awarded at the end of the season.  A math meet consists of three individual rounds of 15 minutes each.   In each of these rounds students solve 4 problems without a calculator (a 1 point question, 2 point question, 3 point question, and a 4 point question).  The problems are not usually typical problems and require thinking outside the box or using a trick.  The math used could be anything from Algebra 1 through Calculus.  These rounds are followed by one 15 minute team round in which the students work together to solve 6 questions of 10 points each.  All schools hold these meets at their own school, proctored by each school's coach and results are tabulated in a spreadsheet.  The other schools we compete against are: Ashwaubenon, Bay Port, Notre Dame, De Pere, West De Pere, Luxemburg-Casco, Pulaski, Green Bay East, Green Bay Preble, and Green Bay West.

Students who are passionate about social studies work together on released social studies themed trivia questions and exams.  They build their knowledge in order to compete against other schools at the Northeastern Wisconsin Academic Competition held at UWGB in the Spring. All students can join. Meetings are once a week from October through April. 

All students on the Southwest Science Academic Team have demonstrated outstanding skills in biology, chemistry and physics. Meetings are during the spring semester, twice a month, on Tuesday mornings.  In April the team meetings every Tuesday until the completion at UWGB in April. In all the team meets 6 to 8 times before the competition. 

The Southwest Cheer Team represents the mission of Green Bay Southwest High School by cultivating patience, sportsmanship, strong work ethic and servant leaders; through courageously setting personal and team goals; holding ourselves accountable to those goals with sacrifice, competition, commitment, and encouragement.

Color Guard members learn basic flag work and technique to perform routines during the Marching Band field show each fall, as well as incorporating routines for the holiday parade and various other choreographed songs throughout the year. Performances take place with the band at various concerts/events. Color Guard members can enroll in band during the fall semester, but it can also be taken solely as an extracurricular opportunity outside of the main school day. Open to all; no prior experience needed. 

The Southwest Varsity Dance Team honors our duty to showcase strong character, build connections, and make commitments both to our own team and community. We enjoy traveling throughout the state of Wisconsin to compete against other high school varsity teams!

 Southwest High School DECA prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality, and management. Members gain real-world experience through competitions, community involvement, and leadership opportunities. DECA helps students build confidence, sharpen business skills, and represent Southwest with Trojan pride — all while having fun and making lifelong connections!

The Drumline is an extracurricular ensemble that meets once a week to prepare various drum cadences. Performances take place with the band at various concerts and events throughout the year. Auditions are open to all students regardless of prior percussion experience. All are welcome to try out! 

As members of the Wisconsin High School Esports Association (WIHSEA), the Southwest esports team competes in state-wide organized matches.  Some of the schools who are members of WIHSEA include Bay Port, Cedarburg, Fox Valley Lutheran, Shawano, Stevens Point Area Senior High, Two Rivers, Wausau West, and West De Pere, and there are many others in this expanding league.  Weekly we will be competing with other schools online, and we may qualify to play in the state championship at the end of each season.

FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America) is a student organization that helps prepare young people for careers in business, leadership, and entrepreneurship. Members participate in competitions, community service projects, leadership conferences, and networking events while developing valuable skills in communication, teamwork, and professionalism. FBLA is a great way to gain real-world experience, build your resume, and make lasting connections with future business leaders.

Southwest FFA is a dynamic student organization that empowers members to develop leadership, personal growth, and career success through agricultural education. Our chapter is part of the national FFA network, offering students hands-on experiences in areas such as plant science, animal science, greenhouse management, and natural resources. Members participate in community service, leadership conferences, and competitive Career Development Events (CDEs), gaining real-world skills that prepare them for future careers in agriculture and beyond.  

Forensics is a competitive club dedicated to public speaking and acting. Students interested in performing with their voice are encouraged to join this group, where they will have the opportunity to compete up to three times. There are a plethora of categories connected to speaking and acting, and students have the freedom to select a category they are most passionate about. The season starts in early January and ends in mid-April. There are a few meetings for the whole team, but most practices last about 15-20 minutes and are scheduled on an individual basis per the availability of the student and the coach(es). 

HOSA is an international student organization recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and the Health Science Education. HOSA's two-fold mission is to promote career opportunities in the healthcare industry and to enhance the delivery of quality health care to all people. Meetings are at least two times per month, leadership opportunities, community service opportunities, encourage healthcare throughout our community competing in HOSA competitions is a requirement to be a part of the group. Learn more about HOSA.

Intra-City Student Council (ICSC) is composed of  student representatives from all of the GBAPS high schools. Its purpose is to bring student voices to the school board and district leadership with the goal of addressing student challenges and concerns, developing community-wide initiatives, and strengthening connections across the district. 

The Jazz Band is an extracurricular ensemble meeting once or twice a week throughout the winter and early spring to prepare a variety of jazz, Latin, and funk tunes. Performances take place with the band/orchestra at various concerts and events throughout the year. Auditions generally take place in the winter. Open to all string, woodwind, brass, and percussion!

Students work individually or in groups to create original historical documentaries, exhibits, papers, performances, or websites.  Instead of learning history, students become the historians themselves. Time is spent researching a topic of choice related to a national theme.  Students take a one day the Historical Archives at UWGB to find primary and secondary historical sources to add to the originality of their research. Following the completion of the project, students show these off at a competition at UWGB and can qualify for the State and National National History Day Competition. All students can join. Work is completed from October through March.

National Honor Society is an organization dedicated to recognizing excellence in high school students. Members excel in the areas of scholarship, character, service, and leadership. The chapter holds monthly meetings and typically has a service project each month.

The Shield is a limited print and digital newspaper that is run by students.  Students write articles, comic strips, do opinion interviews of students and staff, and highlight student life around Southwest.  

Marching & Pep Band are a required part of the Concert Band & Wind Ensemble courses, during which students will perform halftime shows and other pep band tunes for various sporting events throughout the school year. Includes home football games, parades, basketball games, and other community/sporting events. By being enrolled in a band class, you are automatically part of the marching and pep band. 

Spotlight Singers is an auditioned vocal group that combines choreography, costume, singing, and stage presence to convey a story or theme. Our show choir is accompanied by our auditioned band Titletown Sound at competitions. 

SkillsUSA is Southwest’s Technology and Engineering club. Through competitions, leadership and student led activities, we are developing technical, personal, and workplace skills to help students be successful in school, the workplace, and beyond.

Student Council is a school leadership group who is committed to making Southwest a great place to learn and grow.  We plan out many of the school activities and coordinate the school dances.  Additionally, students involved in Student Council engage in the following:

• Share in conversations about school policy

• Foster school spirit

• Encourage positive student conduct

• Promote good citizenship within Green Bay Southwest

Yearbook is a club that only meets a few times as a large group.  The rest of the time commitment suits your style and interest.  Take on a specific portion of the book. Interview athletes.  Create pages during your lunch or study hall.  Come by once a week to help with the job on hand. Photograph sporting events or club meetings.  Meet with the adviser if you are interested to find the perfect fit for your time and interests. The time commitment depends on what part of the book you choose to work on.
