Throughout time and across cultures, people around the world have used textiles to tell stories and convey meaning. The Hmong use the story cloth and elaborate embroidery to keep their culture and values alive for future generations. English tapestries depicted great battles from the middle ages. White women in the early U.S. colonies sewed quilts that expressed religious or family themes. Enslaved African-American men and women made encoded quilts that were used to navigate escape on the Underground Railroad.

“The Art of Possibilities” is a workshop for students who are passionate about and excel in the visual arts and want to learn about advocating for themselves and their talents. Here’s your opportunity to tell your unique story and express your hopes and aspirations through creation of a story cloth.

Catherine AmesIn the morning, Catherine Ames, GT Resource Teacher for the Green Bay Public schools, will lead you through activities and simulations on how to become an advocate for yourself and your talents. You will begin designing your story cloth and learn how you and your talents can be woven into the fabric of others’.

Dal DrummerThen, Dal Drummer will guide you through creating a quilt piece that expresses part of your story. Mr. Drummer is a retired Visual Arts teacher, former Director of the Arts - Lincoln Center of the Arts in Milwaukee, professional artist, and one who loves working with students of all ages in all things artistic! “I feel that creating with art is an important method of communication, an emotional expression, and generally fun way to look at the world and the people and cultures who make it up.”

Be ready to create, advocate, and tell your story!
